Some Sort of Sign

Hello Idlers and Procrastinators,

I’m in Dunedin, where I’ll be for four more weeks. I feel really blessed- this flat is wonderful, with a stunning view and a really nice housemate (Jakob, a grad student at the University of Otago). Huge thanks to Nic, a Dunedin surf photographer (and phenomenon), who was kind enough to put a mention on her popular blog that I was looking for a room for rent… and to Rafael, who responded with an offer of a room in his lovely home, and was trusting enough to do our business by email and a phone call to Sweden, where he’s currently vacationing with his family.

Dunedin is about my favorite city in New Zealand- so much so that I’m impatient to get out there and explore, on this beautiful day. I’m afraid getting you caught up will have to wait a little while, but fear not- the evenings are getting longer as we slide into winter’s chill here in the lower hemisphere, giving me plenty of time to write to you. Until the next installment of P.V., I’ll leave you with a few pictures of what I see when I look out the window.

Love to all…

Oh, by the way- I retouched Florian's surf photos (corrected exposure and straightened horizons) back in the ever-unpopular "Glory!" entry. Maybe this will inspire a torrent of comments (currently lacking) in that posting.

It's hard to keep up with your rapid fire blogging, so don't take comment-lag to heart.

New Zealand has the world's creepiest signage -- probably something their tourist department doesn't want to advertize (or would that be advertise?). Take care down there. With signage like that, there has to be some dark underbelly to their society that you would best avoid.

After looking at the surf photos from your last entry, I realize that the surf cartoons you used to draw in junior high were in fact fairly realistic.

And, as long as I'm being totally disjointed, I'd be interested in seeing Dunedin streetscapes. The name sounds like it's down the road from Bree.

Love the signs. Especially the sheep one from the last blog entry.

I like the description of what the thief was wearing...very intriguing.

It looks like you totally lucked out with your place in Dunedin ! Way to go !!! All of your photos are coming out really well. It's great to be able to click on them and see the larger format too.

Can't wait to see and read more about everything !

Went to Green Apple today and had to grab the latest issue of Bust - Flight Of the Conchords are on the cover and it's a hilarious interview. Great photos too.

Hi Evan,

I know very well that most of you don't give a fig about pictures of waves... well, perhaps you might give a pip or a seed or two, but the point is I'm just kidding about the lack of comment in those obsessive surfing posts. I wouldn't have much to say in a blog that was mostly about, oh, pomeranians. At least, not after the first or second entry.

Assume "Al & Son" was the sign that disturbed you. I think NZ adverstising has the same lurid guilessness of 1950s American advertising. I find it rather heartwarming- you mean, you don't?

I will definately take pictures of Dunedin, it's very photogenic (I think). Next blog.

Can't keep a secret, can you?

Hi Diane, thanks for commenting. I like the sheep billboard too. I turned around and drove back to take the picture. It just seemed so sweet and considerate. Compare to "No Parking/Stopping/Overnight Camping" etc.

Yeah, the place is GREAT, I feel very lucky! Regarding pictures, I've discovered "image correction" in Iphoto and also Preview. Have you ever played with this? You can really abuse it, too- make your pictures resemble crudely retouched postcards, or bleached-out 1970s Polaroids.
